Have a pair of 4500X setup as VSS connecting a pair of ASR1001. Each 1K has a 10G connection to a PTP and to the 4500 in a redundancy set up, there are also 2 10G connections to the cloud, one on each switch. It is basically a full redundant configuration for routing, nothing else fancy on the switches, the ASR do all the work.

Hello @tahscolony ,
the minimum could be a pair of Cisco Catalyst 9300 C9300-24Y connected with stack cables 1Tbps. They provide 24 ports that can be 1G/10G/25G depending on the optics that is mounted.
Assuming that they just need to do routing no other features that are performed by the ASR 1001.
Edit:
I also suppose they are not learning a full BGP table but only few prefixes if needed.
Hope to help

Are the two 4500Xs close enough to be interconnected via proprietary stacking cables (up to about 3m apart), or are they far enough apart something like VSS is required? If the pair of switches are close enough together to use proprietary stacking cables is that kind of stack acceptable, or do you want something like VSS?

If you want to keep the same design, the replacement for the 4500x is the 9500. You move from VSS to StackWise virtual, which works the same as VSS.
BTW, the 4500x are excellent switches. You can still renew support for another year. The EOS is October 2025.

4500X can be replaced in several direction based on the physical size (1RU), the quantity of optic ports and the budget.
For 1 Gbps (and only 1 Gbps), 9300-24S or 48S can be suitable.
For 1-, 10- or 25-Gbps, C9300X-24Y is another suitable candidate.
Any of the 9500-series family will also be suitable.
