7606S booting to Rommon..Help!!

Hi Everyone,

We have a 7606s router with 2 x RSP720-3C-10GE running. The router, when power cycled, goes to rommon for indefinitely.

Below are the exercises that we have done so far:

During the initial rommon, we could deduce

Devices in device table:

      id name

 bootdisk: PCMCIA boot disk

    disk0: PCMCIA disk 0

We then had dir disk0:

PCMCIA disk0: device is not initialized

open: read error...requested 0x4 bytes, got 0x0

trouble reading device magic number

dir: cannot open device "disk0:"

Also dir bootdisk

bootdisk:c7600rsp72043-advipservices-mz.122-33.SRE5.bin

However router only comes back by setting configure register value to 0x2102.

At this point in time the "System" LED stays orange throughout.

Here bootvar has:

BOOT variable does not exist

CONFIG_FILE variable does not exist

BOOTLDR variable does not exist

Configuration register is 0x8002 (will be 0x2102 at next reload)

We also tried formatting disk0: but had following error:

error formatting disk0:

Also dir disk0: in Privileged mode had:

Error opening disk0:/ (No such device)

And show file has:

File Systems:

       Size(b)       Free(b)      Type  Flags  Prefixes

Am I right here assuming that CF disk0: needs to be replaced?

Why is the router booting from rommon when there isn't any image on disk0:? does it boot from bootdisk: instead?

Apologies for a long post but I would be grateful if someone could help pointing out a way to bring this system back up and running.

Thanks for reading!!!

PS: Show version file is attached

Most likely there is nothing in the disk0: slots - the RSPs have internal CF cards (sup-bootdisk and bootdisk, 512MB each) and the IOS images (at least two of them, judging by the amount of free space) are on sup-bootdisk.

I'd do this first (the fact that there are two RSPs might complicate things a bit, but let's assume for now that they contain the same information and behave the same way):

conf t

config-register 0x2102

boot system flash sup-bootdisk:c7600rsp72043-advipservices-mz.122-33.SRE5.bin

exit

wr mem

reload

Hi  Lulian,

Thank you for taking the time to reply.

show sup-bootdisk: suggests multiple files(please refer below). Is it advisable to delete unwanted files or should I proceed with boot system flash anyway?

 show sup-bootdisk: all ------------------

-#- --length-- -----date/time------ path
1    145916260 Feb 16 2012 22:30:02 +00:00 c7600rsp72043-advipservices-mz.122-33.SRE5.bin
2     33554432 Apr 3 2012 09:44:10 +00:00 sea_log.dat
3    179579820 Sep 24 2013 10:10:52 +00:00 c7600rsp72043-advipservicesk9-mz.153-1.S2.bin

It's advisable to configure "boot system flash ..." so that you can be sure it boots the same IOS every time, no matter what other images you may add to or delete from flash in the future.  Deleting unnecessary files is optional (until you need the space to upload a newer image).

Thanks lulian.

I am afraid I can only check the commands that you suggested tomorrow. I will keep you posted.

Thanks again!

Hi lulian,

We followed your suggested commands:

conf t

config-register 0x2102

boot system flash sup-bootdisk:c7600rsp72043-advipservices-mz.122-33.SRE5.bin

exit

wr mem

reload

However after the reload, router jumped straight to rommon.

Now we are unable to bring it back from rommon even with confreg settings. It is stuck in rommon..

When in ROMMON, manual booting should be possible, with "boot sup-bootdisk:c7600rsp72043-advipservices-mz.122-33.SRE5.bin") (or "boot bootdisk:c7600rsp72043-advipservices-mz.122-33.SRE5.bin" - I'm not sure how the SP identifies its flash when in ROMMON).

Also, a console capture of the boot process would be helpful, to see why it doesn't go beyond ROMMON...

Hi lulian,

Apologies for the delayed reply as the permission to customer site was denied. Further to our issue, we opened a TAC and the only way we could solve this issue was by creating RMA and replacing both RSP 1 and RSP 2.

Supposedly there was some hardware bug.

Thank you again for your time and help.

Regards,

Hi lulian,

We followed your suggested commands:

conf t

config-register 0x2102

boot system flash sup-bootdisk:c7600rsp72043-advipservices-mz.122-33.SRE5.bin

exit

wr mem

reload

However after the reload, router jumped straight to rommon.

Now we are unable to bring it back from rommon even with confreg settings. It is stuck in rommon.
