We have two Cisco 7609 routers (CISCO7609 - not the "S" model) each with two 6000 watt power supplies installed. Both run IOS ver 12.2(33)SRD4. We are limited to this version due to a FWSM module installed in both routers.
One of the four 208V power inputs was shutdown during a maintenance window on July 30th.
The power mode was configured as redundant and the log showed this message at the time of the power shutdown:
Jul 30 04:44:53.995: %C6KPWR-SP-4-INPUTCHANGE: Power supply 2 input has changed. Power capacity adjusted to 2671.20W
The input recovered after the maintenance. The log showed this message:

The "show power" output after the power restored showed this:

Note that each power supply has a total power capacity of 5771 watts as they should. However, the system power total is 4536 watts. This is not correct.
Redundant mode should show a total of 5771 and combined mode should be 11542.
We have changed the power mode from redundant to combined and back again. The system power total does not change. It stands at 4536 watts.
Cisco RMA'd the power supplies. We swapped them. Still no change. The system power total is still 4536 watts.
We reloaded the router. Still 4536 watts.
We had an electician check all four 208V power inputs. All four are clean and delivering the correct voltage and current.
Router2 has the same IOS, very similiar line card configuration, same 6000w power supplies and is fed from the same 208V power sources.
The show power output from Router2 is correct.
We have a case open with Cisco TAC but no resolution yet.
Has anyone experienced an issue like this? Any ideas?

Hi,
Seems that starting with 12.2(18)SXE, the power in a 7609 was restricted to 4536W (108A @42V) via software. There is an internal bug that was open for this matter.

"Even though the front end power supply can deliver up to 5771W, the chassis level power is capped by BP power limit in this case."
To put it simple the 7609 BP (back plane) cannot sustain more than 4536W.

Thanks for very much for this information. Can you tell me if the software bug is limiting the switch to 4536W of power or is this cosmetic only? Any details about the bug will help us greatly. Thanks again!
