9200 to 9200 not connecting across GLC-SX-MMD=

I have several Catalyst 9200L switches that I need to connect across old multimode fiber.  I have GLC-SX-MMD= modules connected into their expansion ports, but they do not communicate unless I add a media converter into the mix.  Why will my GLC modules not communicate with one another directly?  Is there some configuration step that I need to add to the switch, or some tweak needed on the ports at both ends???  Confused...

Make sure you are running IOS XE 16.9.2 or later. You also may want to try to set the speed to gig on both switches and try again.
