We are doing a refresh of our wiring closet (access) switches. We had 6509-Es with SUP720-10G and 6748 PoE line cards. This setup is now 6 - 7 years old and need a refresh.
I am looking at new catalyst switch platforms 3850s, 4510Rs etc. I am also evaluating new features. It should be future proof for the next 5 - 6 years.
I am looking for suggestions for both Hardware as well as important features that I should consider for this refresh.
I would appreciate suggestions!
Thanks

This is a major undertaking. What budget is available for this?

Without going into number details I can say that there are around 17 to 18 6509-Es in Acess we are planning to replace. Approx 5000 to 6000 ports.

17 to 18 6509-Es
Approx 5000 to 6000 ports.
I think Instant Access with Sup6T will be able to scale 6000 ports.
There are so many options to choose from: Instant Access with 6840 or Sup6T, 4500R+E, 3650/3850.
PoE (PoE, PoE+/ePoE or uPoE) or non-PoE.
mGig or not?
It all boils down to budget.

This is for user edge? If so, besides the 3850 and the 4510R, the 3650 and perhaps even 2960 would be suitable. Much depends on your budget, whether you intend to do L3 at the user edge and volume and traffic flows within the edge.
