aggregation in bgp

I have one doubt on bgp aggregation in cisco .I am using t he command bgp aggregate to aggregate the route coming from downstream routers .How ever my question is, if the route advertised by the downstream routes is same as the aggregate that I have put on the upstream will it work .To be specific does the aggregate need contributing routes to work or will it work even If I am advertising the same subnet from the downstream …

I just labbed this up and if the aggregate route is the same as the actual route that it is aggregating then it does not get aggregated ie. the downstream EBGP peer receives the route but with the full AS path information.
