Remember the lights go out when there IS traffic; so normally they blink occasionally or flash with moderate traffic. It's possible you have a broadcast storm, spanning tree loop, or something similar going on - extreme traffic levels to all ports would cause the lights to go out until ports are idle.
Are there any kind of messages in the log at all?
