During CCNA studies I have read about the difference between asynchronous and synchronous communications, but these discussions are normally in the context of WAN's. In the case of Ethernet LAN, is this a synchronous communication method ?

Yes, ethernet is synchronous when operating in full duplex. You have an identical ammount of bandwidth in both directions and devices can transmit and recieve simultaneously.
