Attempting to Connect to Cisco switch 2960 Through Laptop with Serial Adapter

I have installed puTTy and Tera Term both in which have seen the port connecting to my switch, however with both terminals i have not been able to type anything inside the terminal. I have seen zero text in the terminal itself and im thinking that is due to a current password on the switch. If anyone can help guide me through this or tell me what my issue is I would be grateful. Thanks!

I assume you are plugging into the blue console port on the switch.

Try turning off all flow control in PuTTY.

We certainly need to verify what you are connecting to on the switch. Assuming that it is the console port of the switch, and assuming that you have the correct console cable (typically Cisco has used a blue cable for console connection) there are several other things that might impact your ability to use the console connection.

- are you sure that you are using the correct com port in the configuration of PuTTy or TeraTerm?

- are you sure that you are using the correct speed in the configuration of PuTTy or TeraTerm? Typically the swtich console port would be 9600 but it might have been set to some other speed. I would suggest starting at 1200, and trying speeds of 2400 and 4800.

In testing I would suggest that every time you change a setting in your terminal emulator that you power cycle the switch. There are some conditions in which the switch would not accept any input but could send output on the console. Power cycle is the best way to be sure that the switch would attempt to send output to the console.
