Hi All,
On a switch, we have vlan 10 for voice and if I set the port to static access vlan 10, the phone does say bad router.
I need to issue switchport voice vlan 10 to make it work.
Am I correct in assuming the phone must be either trunk or have the switchport voice command enabled?
why will it not work in access mode with it been set to vlan 10 which is voice.
many thanks

switchport voice vlan is the recommended syntax but it should still work with just set to access to if thats the only vlan on the port
did you try a Cisco phone if its working without voice vlan then the issue is most likely on the Avaya phone and how cdp works with it and how its communicating to router and switch

I thought CDP is cisco proprietary protorocol and most vendors have to pay to use it on their device.
is avaya one of them ?
if there is no cdp, does the phone not work ?

sorry your right lldp for non cisco , cisco phones use the cdp protocol directly
do you have a cisco phone to test with

no and lldp is disabled also but phone works !
the switchport voice does use CDP as far as I know so slightly puzzled.

yes its bit strange that's why i thought it might be the phone itself , had issues with Avaya and Cisco kit especially with how it operates with qos markings between the 2 vendors
I have all Cisco phones here currently so i cant check Avaya but i can confirm i have multiple different platforms running voice phones from 65 right down to 29s and they are a mix of using voice vlan and in case where just phones are connected alot of the guys have just set it as access port for the voice vlan and that works fine too

CDP = Cisco Discovery Protocol
It doesn't have anything with a device working or not.
Show CDP neighbor will show all cisco related devices attached to the device
the phone will work regardless as long as it is on the proper vlan
