I want yo take a backup "running config" from a router using a console. Can I?

I'm assuming you mean when you are consoled into the router. If so you could just cut & paste from the terminal windown to notepad or with a lot of terminal programs there is an option to capture the text, see this link for more details -

If you use something like Tera Term just turn on the log function and on the device do a term length 0 and then do a sh runn and that will write the whole config into the file, then you just name and close the log file.
