Beginner Needing Help!

Hi All,

I've just got myself a placement gap year with a networking company and have decided to get my CCNA along the way (all paid for =] )

I have just bought some 2950 switches and I am currently going through and learning from different places all of the stuff I need.

I came across one command which does not work though which is;

Davids-Switches(config)#crypto ?

% Unrecognized command

Im currently trying to set up SSH and due to the IOS (from what ive read) this does not work and it seems as though the current IOS does not support SSH at all.

I've done a sh ver as follows;

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software

IOS (tm) C2950 Software (C2950-I6Q4L2-M), Version 12.1(19)EA1c, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2)

Compiled Mon 02-Feb-04 23:29 by yenanh

Image text-base: 0x80010000, data-base: 0x8058A000

ROM: Bootstrap program is C2950 boot loader

Davids-Switches uptime is 16 minutes

System returned to ROM by power-on

System image file is "flash:/c2950-i6q4l2-mz.121-19.EA1c.bin"

cisco WS-C2950-24 (RC32300) processor (revision N0) with 20808K bytes of memory.

Processor board ID FOC0820Z0HJ

Last reset from system-reset

Running Standard Image

24 FastEthernet/IEEE 802.3 interface(s)

32K bytes of flash-simulated non-volatile configuration memory.

Base ethernet MAC Address: 00:11:20:CE:64:40

Motherboard assembly number: 73-5781-12

Power supply part number: 34-0965-01

Motherboard serial number: FOC08201ZB0

Model revision number: N0

Motherboard revision number: B0

Model number: WS-C2950-24

System serial number: FOC0820Z0HJ

Configuration register is 0xF

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Could somone please advise me;

1) Is this device compatible with any sort of IOS upgrade?

2) How would I acutally do it? (the walkthrough guides on cisco are a bit long winded and confusing)

3) If this switch is not compatible, what switch would you recommend for CCNA training for under £100?

This has been a problem which I have been looking at for days, trying to troll the web for any help or suggestions is useless unless Im going to read some 1000 page long description.

Can you please help me?

Thank you very much in advance!

Hello David.

First of all: You need a Crypto image to support SSH in your switches.

The current version your switches is runnining (

flash:/c2950-i6q4l2-mz.121-19.EA1c.bin)  doesn't support SSH feature.

1) Is this device compatible with any sort of IOS upgrade?

The exact same switch you have is SSH capable, you just need to have upgrade the IOS image. For example:

c2950-i6k2l2q4-mz.121-22.EA14.bin <== Notice the K goes for Kripto(Crypto) feature.

2) How would I acutally do it? (the walkthrough guides on cisco are a bit long winded and confusing)

Here is the software upgrade to perform the IOS upgrade.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps628/products_configuration_example09186a0080169627.shtml

3) If this switch is not compatible, what switch would you recommend for CCNA training for under £100?

N/A keep using your switch, even when it's a very old switch in deed it supports sshv2 in the latest release.

Regards.

Hi Wilson,

Thanks for the speedy help! what you said just pretty much sums it all up and makes it easier to understand!

I have tried following these steps but get stuck at downloading the .bin file.

I think the download link on the page is dead ---> http://tools.cisco.com/support/downloads/go/Redirect.x?mdfid=268438038

I keep on getting the unavaliable page, is there another part of the cisco downloads page where I can get this or do you know if this is just temporary maintenance?

Cheers!

David

Hi David.

Glad to hear it worked.

Hi David,

Just to add up to the above replies, in order to simply verify whether your current image supports SSH or not:-

Look for the letter "k" in the name of your image, if it is present then that is the indicator of Crypto support in the image.

For example c2960-lanbasek9-mz.122-52.SE.bin

Hi Again,

Again, im looking for software upgrades, i think im just going to ask which one to upgrade to each time as there are so many, I just cannot find the right one.

This time im looking for an upgrade for my 2621 router. The version is below, its not allowing me to do the command 'encapsulation dot1q' while trying to create a trunk port.

I mean, i just need the most up-to-date version and im unsure which one to get from the downloads page (which I found due to your previous help thank you very much)

Theres about 21 different downloads on there and being completley new to cisco (hopefully rapidly gaining knowledge with peoples help) I am at a complete loss of which to get?

I thought mabye looking for one with an 'i' in there because thats the type I seem to have now, I have seen the ones with 'k' in there which again thanks to your help i understand to be crypto supporting, that may be useful...but just a general heads of which one to go for would be nice

Hi David

"its not allowing me to do the command 'encapsulation dot1q' while trying to create a trunk port."

Ideally we cant create Trunk / Access ports (switchport) in Routers (C2621).

"encapsulation dot1q" command cant be applied on Physical interface of a router.

Your need to break down the Physical interface into subinterfaces and try executing "encapsulation dot1q" command.

For example, Assuming your hosts are in vlan 10 and if Gi0/0 of your router is connected to your LAN switch (Trunk port with vlan 10 allowed in trunk link)

int gi0/0

no ip add

int gi0/0.10

ip address ip_address subnet_mask (default gateway for your hosts in Vlan 10)

encapsulation dot1q 10

Try this and check IP reachability to this IP from any of your hosts in LAN and let  me know if you are facing any problem.

Hi Raj,

I should have really been more clear on my previous comment, I had created fa0/0.10 and fa0/0.20 and was trying to configure it on these virtual ports and that encapsulation command did not work whilst in these virtual ports interfaces, so it would not allow me to do this.

Hi David,

Latest IOS release for your router seems to be 12.4.25d (Maintenance Deployment) released on Aug 10.

Based on Memory availability on your router, I suggest to upgrade the IOS image to the following one:

IP BASE with Crypto support -  c2600-ipbasek9-mz.124-25d.bin  (DRAM / Flash:  64MB / 16MB)
