Hello at all,
from now on, I am the administrator of our cisco network.
We have two catalyst 6500 in VSS Mode, a few C4560, a few C3750 and a few C2960.
I would like to know (because I don't find useful information on the internet) what is the best practice to use a logging server.
I would like to collect all logs from all switches at a central place.
NMS like Solarwinds and Ciscoworks are too expensive for us, but are there possibilities to manage this with free software?
Furthermore, what is the best practice to save the startup-config of all switches daily?
I'm looking forward to your answers.
Best wishes

Yes, its always good to have a logging server. Since you have a smaller network, same server can be used to collect the configs as well (if you can script it). Easy with linux box.
You can use Nagios, a free tool for monitoring.
Firther it actually depend on how frequently do changes in your devices, and based on that you can decide the frequency of backups. Actually here a network admin is the best person to decide.
