Bgp route maps

Could somebody help me understand the direction (in/out) to be used with route maps when route map is applied to a bgp neighbor?

In and Out for route maps uses the perspective of the router. So advertisements from a neighbor into the router are controlled with route map in. Advertisements from the router to a neighbor are controlled with rout map out.
