Hi,

What is burst rate? I have read some info but still i didn't get.

if i set in a router max burst size and send burst traffic more than and less than the configured burst size/rate how the system should act?

Kindly share your inputs on this.

Regards

hi

Hi if your talking about micro burst traffic , it can overload buffers on switch interfaces , traffic will be dropped as there is no buffer to store it in , you can adjust buffers or get a better switch with larger buffers if its constantly happening to your device, you can also track the bursts through graph plotting and wireshark as well

............................................

Micro-bursting is a phenomenon where rapid bursts of data packets are sent in quick
succession, leading to periods of full line-rate transmission that can overflow packet buffers
of the network stack, both in network endpoints and routers and switches inside the
network.
Symptoms of micro bursts will manifest in the form of ignores and/ or overruns (also shown
as accumulated in “input error” counter within show interface output). This is indicative of
receive ring and corresponding packet buffer being overwhelmed due to data bursts
coming in over extremely short period of time (microseconds).

Burst rate is an allowance to go beyond some "normal" rate, sometimes for a limited time.

For example, supposed you have a 10 Mbps link, but you've contracted to only use 5 Mbps.  Now we could impose a hard limit that you could never be allowed to use more than 5 Mbps, but since 10 Mbps is physically available, we could also allow you to use the full, or burst to, 10 Mbps.

We could limit the amount of time you're allowed to use 10 Mbps or we might allow you to use it as long as you want, but with a surcharge (like going over your cellular time allowance).

How a router will act, with a burst setting depends on the implementation and the feature using a burst measurement.
