C2960X-48LPS POE ports mapping problem...

Hello,

I have 2 problems with my WS-C2960X-48LPS_L switch.

1. When I connect some POE compliance device - it detects POE on different ports (even if this port is currently disconnected).

For example I connect POE camera to port 22, but it shows POE on port 46 (though this port doesn't have LINK on it). And all the port POE status is messed up and seems like random.

2. Most important problem. The switch doesn't want to provide POE+ 30 watt to my cameras. Maximum which I see in status is 15 watt (POE).

So as result 3 of my cameras don't work.

I'm  using only 20% of POE budged btw.

I tried different firmware images, and even formatted flash inside,  but the problem with POE is always the same.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi -

Try adding the command "power inline static" to your camera ports.

PSC

When I connect camera to port 1 - switch shows that POE for port 25 occupied (so POE status is actually not random but mirrored: first half of the switch occupies POE on second half and the opposite).

So I enabled static power for both 1st and 25th port.

In the ports monitor I see POE status:

port 1: 30 Off

port 25: 30 On

But the camera still failing with the message: Not enough power for both camera and pan-tilt motors.

The camera is Axis P5415-E which requires POE+ 802.3at (30W).

It is working with my another switch: Cisco SG500-28P.

There is power inline stats.

Though the camera is on port 37 - it shows it's POE on port 13. But supplies 15 W instead of 30. So 802.3at doesn't work.

Hi -

For automatic power negotiation to occur, you need a protocol for the devices to exchange information.  For Cisco IP phones and APs the protocol is CDP.  3rd party devices usually use LLDP.

Have you enabled LLDP on your switch?

I think you pointed out that you have a power budget of 370W.  I agree.  The documentation shows that the LPS version of the switch can only run 12 ports at 30W.

PSC

Hi,

I guess LLDP is enabled by default? I know about those protocols, but according to power stats the switch detects the POE class of device correctly. So protocols are ok. I think my switch has hardware issues (since it detects link on correct port but POE on the opposite side port - negotiation happens on LINK port but POE controller gives the power on another port...).

P.S. Power budget is not exceeded. It doesn't work even with single camera.

Hi -

LLDP is not enabled by default.  You can enable it with "lldp run" in global configuration mode on the switch.  I've found that Catalyst switches will only provide 15W to a device unless 1 of 2 things happens. Either 1) you force the output power with the "power inline static" command, or 2) CDP/LLDP successfully negotiates the power level change.

If you continue to have problems, then you will likely need to open a TAC case.
