C6509-E WS-SUP720-3BXL to VS-S2T-10G Supervisor Upgrade Path

Good Morning All,

We currently have 2 6509-E chassis implemented as 2 seperate devices each with 2 WS-SUP720-3BXL in. We are looking to implement the pair as a VSS pair however our current supervisors do not support that.  To that as a pre-requisite of the VSS procedure we need to upgrade our supervisors to the VS-S2T-10G.

I was looking to see if anyone else has been through this process and any pearls of wisdom/gotchas they discovered. Given we currently have 2 supervisors in each chassis does anyone know if its possible to remove the second supervisor from a chasis install the new supervisor and copy the config across and then failover to the new supervisor?

The current sup's are running Version 12.2(33)SXI13 with IP SERV licensing

Thanks in Advance

Wes

Hi Wes,

Before you make any changes, go over this document and make sure your cards are compatible with table-5 in this link

As far as removing the second sup in your chassis and putting a new sup and copy the config across, that will not work, because in order for the sups to form an SSO, the 2 sups in the chassis must be exactly the same.  Migrating configs from stand-alone switches to VSS is not a straight forward process because when you convert to VSS all your port numbering will change.
