C9300-24S Gig interfaces not coming up

We are replacing 3850 switches with the C9300. We moved the 1Gig sfp from the 3850 into the C9300 and the switch sees the sfp but when the cable is connected the interface doesn't come up, no lights lit, interface not connected.

The C9300 has the 8 x 10Gig module installed and when moving the sfp and cable to the 10Gig interface it comes up.

The config was copied from the 1Gig interface to the 10 gig interface.

I can't believe a Cisco sfp would be compatible with the 3850 but not the C9300 unless installed in the 10Gig expansion.

  - That is possible , please use Cisco Optics-to-Device Compatibility Matrix for compatible SFPs for the new device,

The 3850 is set to Auto and the PC is set to Auto but playing around with the interface config on the C9300 #speed nonegotiate has brought the interface up.

Found the below which covers my issue but makes no sense as the PC is set to Auto and was working with the 3850

  • The nonegotiate keyword is available only for SFP module ports. SFP module ports operate only at 1000 Mb/s but can be configured to not negotiate if connected to a device that does not support autonegotiation.
