Can I use 100Mbs SPF modules on the Cisco 4948 switch?

I have a GLC-GE-100FX SPF module and when I do a 'show interface' it says media type is unknown.

I tried and it doesn't connect too a 100Mbs switch, or can these SFP ports only be used for gigabit fiber modules?

According to this page it should work, right?

Do you have the correct IOS (15.1(1)SG) installed?

It has version ROM: 12.2(31r)SGA1

bootflash:cat4500-ipbasek9-mz.122-54.SG.bin

Hi ,

Have you upgraded to 15.1(1)SG and check?

Thanks,

Madhu

I upgraded the IOS via TFTP to this version:

cat4500-ipbasek9-mz.150-2.SG10.bin

But it still doesn't recognize the 100Mb SPF module.

Hello Kevin,

Looking at the data sheet:-
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-4900-series-switches/product_data_sheet0900aecd8017a72e.html

"The Cisco Catalyst 4948 offers 48 ports of wire-speed 10/100/1000BASE-T with four alternative wired ports that can accommodate optional 1000BASE-X Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) optics.[1] Exceptional reliability and serviceability are delivered with optional internal AC or DC 1+1 hot-swappable power supplies and a hot-swappable fan tray with redundant fans (Figures 1 and 2)."

The SFP slots are GIG only

Further down the doc you see a table for supported SFPs

If your switch is a 4948E then from your own link table 5

Catalyst 4900 Series

WS-C4948E
WS-X4908

GLC-GE-100FX

15.1(1)SG

Your SFP should be supported.

Maybe my problem is that it's a WS-C4948-S and not a 4948-E.
