Can't connect to console on 3750X stack members

I have a 3750X stack of 6 switches, I have a terminal server console server plugged into the console ports of all 6 switches. I am having a strange issue where I can connect to the master via the console, get a login prompt then I can log in, but when I try and connect to any of the members then I get a prompt "Press RETURN to get started" When I push return, it just loops back to the same prompt again:

switch-6 con0 is now available

Press RETURN to get started.

switch-6 con0 is now available

Press RETURN to get started.

I can connect to the stack via SSH fine etc. I am running 15.0(1)SE2. The stack is configured for TACACS+ auth via Cisco ACS.

Any help, ideas appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Mark,

Do you have anything configured for the console line on this switch stack?

Hi Ivan

Nothing except a timeout.

line con 0

exec-timeout 60 0

Thanks

Hi Mark,

So the configuration is not responsible for that. Since the return key entry is actually doing something, HW issue with cabling or ports is also unlikely.

I suggest to try connecting to the stack console with a laptop to test if the issue is related to the console server.

If there is any authentication on the console line, remove it temporarily as another test.

And if the problem is still local to the switch and auth is not responsible, open a Cisco case with TAC to investigate if this is some bug. I checked the bugs database but nothing matches from a quick search.

Thanks Ivan

I will raise a TAC case with Cisco and see if they can pinpoint the issue. It might be IOS related but the switches are in production so can't upgrade easily.

Thanks

Mark

Hi,

I know its been a while but let me ask you something. Did you solve this issue?.

Im getting a loop when I try to use the console port and refuse the connection via VTY.

Thanks.

Hi

I have seen similar situations on Cisco 3850, if Im not wrong once the switches are stacked you can log in via console on the Master switch only. The rest of the switches (members) will not let you log in.

Remember the Master is sync with the other switches and it manages everything and now all of them are seen like one switch.
