Cannot Access Cisco Router through Serial via putty

Hello,

I'm trying to access the CLI of Cisco 1921 through Console Port (cause it's used and I don't know its IP). It only show garbage in the screen and I cannot enter any command. I tried to change the baud rate speed but it only changes the way that the garbage text looks.

I tried to reset Cisco 1921 through the reset button but nothing changes. I changed the USB port of PC, it recognizes the port but still the same problem (and same thing happens with Cisco 1721 Router).

In the attachment is the text screen of different baud rate speed.

Regards,

Enid.

Is possible to log in via console and verify the configuration under the line vty?

Hello,

You will need to test each and every supported baud rate before concluding that the console is faulty. Please be sure to test all these:

1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600, 115200

You might want to start with 115200 and going backwards - I suspect that the router could have been configured for the highest supported baud rate on the console.

Best regards,
Peter

1. I tried all of them.

2. I tried it from another PC.

3. I tried another serial cable.

Still the same problem. And I don't understand why the reset doesn't make it work.

I finally found the solution, it was the USB-to-Serial cable.

I connected the router into another PC who has Serial (without the USB-to-Serial cable) only with the console cable and it worked perfectly.

Thank you for your replies.

Hi,
In the following video step by step process has been shown how to Connect Cisco Router or Switch using PuTTY and Console Cable as well as how to Change Text Color, Font Size, Background color permanently on PuTTY.

First Download and install PuTTY (emulator terminal software)

Step 1: Attach the DV9 Female end of Console cable with the DV9 Male end of the USB to DV9 Serial Converter and then connect the RJ54 connector end of the Console cable to the Cisco router or Switch.
First check the COM port number

Step 2: Check the COM Port number:
=> Go Device Manager->Port (COM & LPT)-> check USB Serial Port (COM port)

Step 3: Open Putty
-> Select Connection Type to "Serial"
-> in Serial Line change the COM port number exactly which we checked in step 2.
-> click open and a black window will appear and press Enter finally it will access the Cisco Device.
-> Type "enable" to go to privilege mode.
