Cannot ping host connected to Nx6004 from L3 Switch

Hi,

We are testing the build of a new DC with 2 x NX6004 leaf switches. L3 duties are going to be performed by a pair of Cat 4500-X switches in VSS. These switches are connected to the pair NX-6004 using MEC in 4500 and VPC in the 6004. The interface VLANs are on the 4500s and the NX-6004 are purely L2.

We have a test host connected to a 2224 FEX connected to one of the 6004. The FEX is only connected to one 6004. The VLANs are on the NX switches and I can see the host MAC in the mac address table on both the 6004 and the the 4500s. But I cannot ping the host from the 4500 switch.

Any idea why this is happening? I am new to the NX configs. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

P Sarkar

Hi,

Is VPC configured correctly on the 6004 switches?

Can you provide the output of "sh run vpc" and "sh vpc" from both 6004s?

Is the vlan that the host is in added to VPC peer link?

Also, do you see the FEX from the 6004 (sh fex)?

Can you provide the vlan config from both 6004 and VSS?

Hello Sarkar,

Is all plans are trunked till 4500 and SVI for all vlans are configured at 4500 or at 6k.

You need to have SVI on the same vlan to ping the host.

what is the gateway of the host and where it is configured , from that are you able to ping the host ?

-GI

Hi GI,

The SVI for all the VLANs are on the 4500. The fex is single homed to 1 NX6k. The gateway configured on the host is the SVI ip on the 4500 and we cannot ping the host from the 4500 or vice versa. I can see the fex on the switch and also the interfaces on the fex show as configured to the correct vlan. I can see the mac addresses of the hosts ont he 4500 and it points to the correct port channel

Today we moved a few cables and ran into a different issue. The 2nd NX6K is connected to the 4500 over the mgmt0 interface. this is also the peer keepalive link. for some reason now I cannot ping the mgmt vlan SVI on the 4500 from the mgmt0 interface on the management VRF. The mgmt0 ip is 10.x.x.21 and the SVI ip is 10.x.x.24 in the same subnet. The defautt route on the management VRF also points to the SVI on the 4500 as the next hop. All pings come back as destination host unreachable.
