Hi Folks
I have an access L2 switch to which I have connected an ESX NICs with 4 access ports. I see its MACs on the ports and the ARP entry on the L3 switch. Why can I only ping the server from L3 switch but not from the L2?

What is the management IP address and subnet mask of the L2 switch and the server ?
Can the L3 switch ping the server ?

Hi Jon
Yes I can ping the server from L3 as I mentioned in my post. The management IP of the L2 switch differs from the VLAN on which is the ESX. Server has the gateway of the SVI on the L3.

Sorry, should have read the question more carefully :)
Does the L3 switch have an SVI for the management subnet ?
If so assuming it isn't already there add this to your L2 switch -
"ip default-gateway x.x.x.x"
where x.x.x.x is the IP address of the SVI for the management subnet on the L3 switch.
