cannot ping the vmkernel interface on local esx server

I cannot seem to ping the vmotion interface on an esx server that is configured on another vlan.

The switchport is set to the right vlan. There are other devices on the same switch set to the same vlan and they cannot even ping each other.

on the switch itself

The config is

interface Vlan247

ip address 10.247.0.233 255.255.0.0

no ip route-cache

any idea?

ok I noticed on another switch, that same vlan exists but it does not have an ip address configured for that vlan

no ip address

no ip route-cache

but servers connected to this switch can ping the vmkernel interfaces on the 247 vlan.

is the gateway address causing a problem?
