Cannot ping two VLANs on same network on a 2960X switch.

I have been beating my head against the wall at this the last few days.  I am trying to configure two 2960X switches that are going to be connected with a fiber home run with no ISP or router involved.  I have both switches MGMT Vlan set to VLAN2 with SW1:10.101.1.33/24 and SW2:10.101.1.34/24.  I initially was trying to use a /27 CIDR but decided to use a /24 CIDR until i can figure out what im doing wrong.  

Questions I have:

1) #Ip routing is not needed correct?

2) Do i need to use (config) Ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.101.1.34 on SW1 and .33 on SW2?

3)Do i need to use (config)Default-gateway x.x.y.y?  

I can ping both SVIs when I am in the proper VLAN so I know my trunk is working but anything outside of MGMT VLAN I cannot.  I have PC1 set to 10.101.1.40/24 with no gateway connected to Switchport 1.  PC2 set to 10.101.1.112/24 w/ no gateway using Switchport48 and I set the port to (config-if) Switchport mode access to VLAN4.  I know my I also turned VTP off on both switches.  

 

Any ideas how to simply make one vlan talk to another would be greatly appreciated.  Oh, and I did turn firewalls off on both PCs with no luck.

Maybe I don't fully understand what you're trying to do, but if you want to get packets from one vlan to another you need to use routing. Either a layer 3 capable switch or a separate router should do.

I am fairly new at this.  I have tried routing (Ive defaulted the switch many times re-trying config).  

This is what I had on SW1:

(config)Ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.101.1.34

(config)Ip routing

(config) Int Vlan 2

(config-If) 10.101.1.33 255.255.255.0

 

SW2:

(config)Ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.101.1.33

All I am trying to do is set up VLAN2 and VLAN4 on SW1 (2960x) and SW2 (2960x) and be able to ping devices from VLAN2 to VLAN4.  

Would there be any default settings on the switch blocking my ability to do so?

UPDATE:

 

After getting IP Routing configured I can now ping VLAN4 from SW1 and SW2 connected via a VLAN2 port.  I cannot, however ping all the way through from Laptop (10.101.1.40/27) to PC (10.101.1.112/27).  I also went back to my /27 CIDR so I can set up different SVI per VLAN.  

Firewall is still shut off but not able to ping from Laptop to PC.  

Any ideas?

To communicate between VLAN'S you need to route!

In addition you don't have a trunk configured, this means traffic from other VLAN'S won't be able to traverse the link.

The two devices you mention here won't be able to communicate, as they are on different networks.

Please let us know which  family of 2960-X switch are you using.

the concept that I believe you are missing here is the fact that the point of different vlans is to make different internal networks within your entire network. This gives you the ability to separate traffic intended for one vlan and stop that traffic from being seen by anyone not in that vlan. The downside of this is of course that you can not communicate with others outside your vlan. To achieve inter-vlan connectivity you will want to make all ports that have switch to switch connections to be trunks and all end-user ports to be access ports. To move from different vlans you will need routing capability.

It appears  you are trying to achieve communication between your vlans or server as mentioned in attached scenario. to achieve communication between two PC in below scenario, default route or default gateway is not required..

2. And also you mentioned you want communication between VLAN 2 and VLAN 4, please provide configuration of VLan 4 as well.
