Hello,
I have a Catalyst 2950 24port - seems to me is a new one(but probably is possible was configured), but I can't get a DHCP adress for the inicial config and the reset don't help me too .
The console works via Hyperterminal but I can't go to "enable" mode - I don't know the password . I was traing somethink like - shutdown switch and press CTRL+Break when the switch starts, but no effect . The inicial startup seems to me have several errors - is it OK ? I'm new in Cisco HW so no experience yet how to solve myself .

Hi,
Take a look here for password recovery: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps628/products_password_recovery09186a0080094184.shtml

Hello David,
There seems to be some kind of configuration that does not align very well with the current switch IOS. Nevertheless, there is a way how to bypass the stored configuration when booting the device.
Power off the switch, then press and hold the MODE button on the front panel, and while holding it, power the switch back on (some assistance by a second person may be necessary here). Hold the MODE button pressed for several more seconds (10-15) and observe the output on the console. When a bootloader message stating that the boot process has been interrupted shows up, release the button.
Next, use the console to type in these commands (three of them will already be suggested on the screen as the part of the displayed output):
flash_init
load_helper
rename flash:config.text flash:config.old
boot
The first command will initialize the flash filesystem. The second command does not actually do nothing on 2950 platform but it does not hurt to enter it. The third command will rename the configuration file to a different name so that it won't be loaded when the switch boots up, and the last command will make the switch restart the booting process.
After these steps, your switch should start with an empty configuration (the VLAN database will remain intact, though - if you want to remove it as well you should delete it using the command delete flash:vlan.dat once your IOS boots up properly and you are able to access the privileged mode and then reload once again without storing any configuration - this will put your device in a completely erased and factory clean state).
Feel welcome to ask further! Also please check the following document:
Best regards,
Peter

David,
Please, first enter the flash_init and load_helper commands. Only then use the rename flash:config.text flash:config.old command.
Also please note that the bootloader does not recognize any special keys - arrow keys, TAB key, Home/End etc. If you happen to press one of those, the current command on the prompt will not be recognized (due to a control character associated with these keys which is invisible but remains recorded in the prompt buffer). You will have to press Enter at least once to get a clean prompt, then type your command again - without using any of these special keys.
Best regards,
Peter

Thank you for the answer. Now it's solved.

Hi David,
I am glad to hear that.
Best regards,
Peter
