Catalyst 6880 - EXCESSIVE_PARITY_ERROR - how to reload a single linecard

Hi,

I get lots of EXCESSIVE_PARITY_ERROR - Messages on a 6880X running in a VSS.

Example:

Jul 29 13:04:56 10.15.1.239 361325: Jul 29 07:48:22.849: %EARL-SW2_DFC1-1-EXCESSIVE_PARITY_ERROR: EARL 0: Parity error detected in VRAM

Jul 29 13:04:58 10.15.1.239 361326: Jul 29 07:48:24.381: %EARL-SW2_DFC1-1-EXCESSIVE_PARITY_ERROR: EARL 0: Parity error detected in VRAM

Jul 29 13:05:01 10.15.1.239 361327: Jul 29 07:48:27.081: %EARL-SW2_DFC1-1-EXCESSIVE_PARITY_ERROR: EARL 0: Parity error detected in VRAM

Jul 29 13:05:03 10.15.1.239 361328: Jul 29 07:48:30.837: %EARL-SW2_DFC1-3-NF_PARITY_ERROR: EARL 0  NF ASIC: Uncorrectable Parity error in Netflow

To get rid of the Messages a reload/reboot of the linecard is needed

Does "SW2_DFC1-1" mean SW2=Switch 2 and DFC1-1 = Slot 1?

Means SW2_DFC1-3 another linecard?

I would like to know with which commands I can reload the problematic linecards.

All best

As i understand

Reseat the line card is far better than "reload the line card".
Pull out the line card, wait for 5 seconds, and push the line card back in.

... good to know. I will try to reseat the linecard as you proposed.

As the error Messages state "SW2_DFC1-1" for the parity errors

do I have to reseat the linecard in Switch2, Slot 1?

Hints "

EARL-SW2_DFC1-3-NF_PARITY_ERROR: EARL 0  NF ASIC: Uncorrectable Parity error in Netflow Table." to another Problem in another Slot?

Yes, switch 2, slot 1.

Thanks for the info.
I reseat the card on sunday and report afterwards.

Give the chassis 4 weeks. If the error message does not appear, then good.
If it does appear, move the line card from one slot to another: This will help determine if the issue is the line card or the back-plane of the chassis.

Hi Leo Laohoo,

I reseatet the Linecard as you proposed but somehow the linecard was not detected by the Chassis.

All port-LEDs of the linecard did not Flash at all so first i thaught I had to power the linecard up. So I typed:

(config)#power enable switch 2 module 1       which returned
% module is already enabled

Checking the ports gave back "Hardware not present"

After trying to reseat the card again, with the same outcome, I rebootet the whole Switch.

Now the linecard is back online and reacts normal.

I did not Encounter "EXCESSIVE_PARITY_ERRORS" to date.

Do you have an idea why the line card was not detected after reseat?

Give the line card 4 weeks.
If no other logs appear, then all good.
If any other logs appear that is not "ordinary", RMA the line card.

To date all is ok.

Thanks for the answers.
