Paul,
The 19,000 mark hasn't been broken yet, perhaps in 4 weeks or so.
I also heard the same tale about the lab being CCIE 1024 and CCIE 1025 is recorded here

OK, so my numbers are a little out - the point I was making still holds that I suspect the Cisco published figure is reasonable of around 15,000 *active* CCIEs worldwide.
That is still not a big number!

Paul,
I fully agree with your point. The numbers aren't high at all. 15,000 worldwide is still a minuscule amount.
Getting a Lab date is as hard as passing the Lab. The numbers are increasing because people are taking the certification seriously.
That's a good thing, IMHO.

I agree - 15,000 is a small number. If I look at it from a local perspective, there are 7 in little Luxembourg. Well, Luxembourg may be small, but:
- a number of big banks are based here,
- companies like Skype are based here,
- SES-Astra (the satellite people) are based here,
- European Institutions such as the Commission, the Parliament, and the Court of Justice are part-based here.
Suddenly 7 CCIEs does not seem to be an enormous number.
