Changing roles on a L9200 stack

Hi all,

we came to find that:

  • switch 1 has role "Active". This is OK because connected to the gateway
  • switch 2 has role "Standby". This is not OK since it is not connected to the gateway
  • switch 3 has role "Member". not OK either since this one is connected to the gateway as well.

When I issue

  switch 3 role Standby

it tells me "WARNING: Changing the switch role may result in redundancy mode being configured to designated Active/Standby mode for this stack. If the configured Active or Standby switch numbers do not boot up, then the stack will not be able to boot. Do you want to continue?[y/n]? [yes]:"

which is where I hit "n". Can someone tell me what this means? Can I just change the role of switch 3 ? I cannot switch the cabling because 1 and 3 have 10Gbit connection to the gateway; 2 has no 10Gbit interfaces.

Thanks in advance and best regards,

Arjen Van Drie.

By the way, I also checked https://community.cisco.com/t5/switching/cisco-9300-stack-member-role-change/td-p/4897787 and the document it links to, but there the "danger" does not become clear.
