cisco 3750 stacking....

Hi,

We have 4 no of cisco 3750 switches in stack.

Q.1 ) How to upgrade IOS of all 4 switches, by keeping them in stack...

As per my knowledge one way is isolate them, upgrade ios, again add them in stack, which would be last way or lengthy procedure.

another way is by using session command I can jump on each member switch copy ios file on each member's flash and then reload all switches.

but I want to know, is there any another way to upgrade the ios on all member switches simultaneously with lowest down time??

Q.2) suppose I have 2 nos member switches in stack. first switch port will start as 1/0/x and second switch port will start from 2/0/x.

After isolating from stack, I want to make second switch as normal or default one. and its interface should appear as default switch one.

I just renumbered the switch number of second switch as one and restarted it. it worked. but is there any another way to make switch as default one.

Sandy

Just another option you could use .tar file upgrade the lot at once

http://www.ciscozine.com/how-to-upgrade-a-cisco-stack/

Im not aware of another way to force a switch to be master usually you set the master at highest priority of 15 and then lower numbers for the slave switches have not seen another method

if the priority is not set it follows these rules

Stack Master Election

How is the stack master elected?

These rules have been defined to determine which unit within a stack is chosen as the master. When switches are added or stacks are merged, the master will be chosen based on these rules, in the order specified:

  1. The switch that is currently the stack master

Note: When stacks merge, the elected stack master would have been the master of one of the merged stacks.

Note: When stacks partition, the stack master of the original stack will be the master of its partition.

  2. The switch with the highest stack member priority value

Note: Cisco recommends that you assign the highest priority value to the switch that you prefer to be the stack master. This ensures that the switch is re-elected as stack master if a re-election occurs.

  3. The switch that uses the non-default interface-level configuration

  4. The switch with the higher Hardware/Software priority. These switch software versions are listed from highest to lowest priority:

    1. Cryptographic IP services image software

    2. Noncryptographic IP services image software

    3. Cryptographic IP base image software

    4. Noncryptographic IP base image software

Note: Switches that run Cryptographic or IP services image will take a longer time to load than Non-Cryptographic or IP base image. When you power on or reset an entire switch stack, some stack members will not participate in the stack master election. This is because stack members that are powered on within the same 20-second time frame participate in the stack master election and have a chance to become the stack master. Stack members that are powered on after the 20-second time frame do not participate in this initial election and only become stack members. At times, switches with lower software priority can become the stack master, but all stack members will participate in the stack master re-election.

  5. The switch with the longest system up-time

  6. The switch with the lowest MAC address

HI,

Thanks Mark..

The provided link by you is only for cisco 2960s, same method will work for cisco 3750 or not ??

while downloading IOS from cisco site.. I think files are generally in .bin format; how to download it in .tar format.

what about my second question...

Sandy.

hey

exact same commands for 3750 as below from one of 3750 my stacks , actually there are tar images and .bin on each download page

ok. that's great... thanx once again..

can you tell me about my second question..plz

sorry which 2nd question I thought I answered the renumbering question for the stack above that's the best way to do it but if you don't number the switches , the switches themselves will follow that rule section above to pick a master themselves or did I miss-understand the question ?

Hi,

Priority is only for election of master...

but I observed, after detaching any member switch from stack, it shows its previous switch port numbers only, even after doing write erase also it showed same previous stack port nos.

for example, in stack, member switch shows 2/0/x port nos..

even after detaching from stack, and doing write erase, it shows same numbers.

which I want to make port numbers also as default or factory reset the switch..

Yes that's a problem have that on a couple of switches currently I removed from stacks they still work fine though  , you could try reimage them completely in standalone mode and see if that fixes it

Reimaging means re-install ios.. which is not feasible solution instead of re-numbering the switch & reloading, problem get resolved.

but I think there must be different method...

On 3750s, you can speed up the time to load a new IOS on a stack, by loading to each stack member concurrently.  However, loading the IOS image to the stack doesn't impact system downtime.

Actually upgrading the stack to run a different IOS, I recall, is going to require every stack member to be rebooted, and  generally to insure compatibility between stack members, you want them all on the same IOS version at the same time.  This is probably best accomplished by reloading the stack.  Downtime will be several minutes unless the IOS upgrade does some firmware upgrades too.  Then the upgrade will take much longer.

I don't believe the 3750s every got a rolling upgrade option.
