Re: Cisco 4331 OS install

Hi,

I have Cisco 4331 router and I am trying to install OS on it via tftp but it's not working for some reasons. I tried using USB but the router doesn't see the USB when plugged in.

The router boots into rommon.

When I enter the following it works

IP_ADDRESS=10.1.1.1

IP_SUBNET_MASK=255.0.0.0

DEFAULT_GATEWAY=10.1.1.2

TFTP_SERVER=10.1.1.2

TFTP_FILE=isr4300-universalk9.16.09.04.SPA.bin

but once I give the router boot tftp:
it looks for the file but doesn't find it and comes back with can't find file something along those lines.

MY tftp server is running and my PC is to have 10.1.1.2 IP address

My PC IP settings

IP: 10.1.1.2

MASK: 255.0.0.0

Default: 10.1.1.1

Any help with would be great!

This can be connectivity issue. Can you ping the router from PC and vice-versa?

Or it can be permission on the TFTP side.

Also, make sure you select the right interface on the PC for the TFTP server

I can ping my self 10.1.1.2 but not the router can't figure out why. put I did set the router on 10.1.1.1 I request timeout, and I did plug my ethernet cable into port ether 0 right next to the console cable. I did select the right interface on the pc for the TFTP server.

can you ping from rommon?

The flash/bootflash is "locked up" when the router is in ROMMON. This behaviour is a "security" feature due to the following security vulnerabilities:

Cisco IOS XE Software for Cisco Catalyst 9300 Series Switches Secure Boot Bypass Vulnerability
Cisco IOS XE ROM Monitor Software for Catalyst Switches Information Disclosure Vulnerability

If the firmware is in a USB flash drive, it is still faster and easier to boot the router using the USB flash and then copy the firmware back into the router.

Do the following:
1. Boot the router using the firmware from the USB flash:

boot usb0:filename.bin

2. As soon as the router boots normally, copy the firmware back into the flash/bootflash of the router:

copy usb0:filename.bin flash:

3. Convert the firmware using Install Mode: Cisco ISR & ASR 1k Routers: IOS-XE/Firmware Upgrade (Install Mode)

I got the usb to boot the OS file but know it stuck at the boot process.

rommon 3 > boot usb0:isr4300-universalk9.16.09.04.SPA.bin

Check Table 5

- A possible cause is older ROMMON version on the ISR and or not compatible with isr4300-universalk9.16.09.04.SPA.bin
(=> check release notes for intended version and look for notes related to ROMMON)

Reboot the router. (Do not force the router to boot the firmware.)

Post the entire bootup process.
