Cisco 6513-E Linecards

Hi,

We are thinking of using Cisco 6513-E as an access switch in our environment. We usually use 4506-E as an access switch but we would like to reuse the spare Sup720s we have. We currently have a requirement of 500 seats per floor and I think the 6513-E would fit in as it can provide more than 500 ports in one chassis. We need full PoE support so I'm looking at the 8700W A/C power supplies to be used. I am planning to use WS-X6148A-GE-45AF as the line cards to support IP phones. However, I came across 6513-E's FAQ and saw that it only supports 67xx line cards on slots 9 to 13.

Q. Will you get 80 Gbps per slot with the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Supervisor Engine 720?

A. No. The Cisco Catalyst 6513-E chassis with the future Sup2T will  support 80 Gbps per slot on all 13 slots. The Cisco Catalyst 6513-E with  Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Supervisor Engine 720 will have the same  bandwidth caveats that exist on the current non-E 6513 chassis. With a  Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Supervisor Engine 720, the fabric channel  connections for the Cisco Catalyst 6513-E and 6513 (non-E) are  distributed the same: that is, slots 1 through 8 are single channel with  20 Gbps capacity, and slots 9 through 13 are dual channel, providing 40  Gbps/slot. So with the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Supervisor Engine  720, a Cisco Catalyst 6513-E will only support the 67xx line cards in  slots 9 through 13.

Just want to make sure what exactly they are saying. Are they saying that the 67xx line cards will only be usable on slots 9 through 13? Or only 67xx linecards will be supported on slots 9 through 13?

I also looked at this White Paper and it says it can support Classic LCs from slots 1 through 13. (Although it's not sayin 6513-E, only 6513)

I checked the Dynamic Configuration Utility and it's not giving me and option for any 61XX or 65xx linecards as well.

Can you help me confirm if I can use 6148A-GE-45-AF on slots 1 through 6 and 8 through 13 so I can have all modules loaded with an PoE module?

Thanks in advance.

-John

It's saying if you want to use dual 20Gbps modules then you can only use them in slot 9 - 13. But you can still use those slots for other modules so you should be fine.

For example the 6509 support dual 20Gbps for every slot but it doesn't stop you using other linecards in any slot.

As Jon noted, only dual fabric channel 67xx line cards would only work in slots 9..13 on 6513 chassis.  Some 67xx line cards are single fabric channel, e.g. 6724, and will work in any slot.

The 6148s are classic bus line cards, so they too will work in any slot of a 6513.

The -E 6513 chassis only becomes crucial if you want to use it with a sup2t.

PS:

BTW: there's also a 6196 PoE line card, although only 10/100.
