Cisco 7513 PSU in TBD state

Hi Everyone,

Hope everyones having a great day!

I would like to request assistance from all the gurus here for an issue i have with a Cisco 7513MX PSU. There probably arent many people who are aware of 7500 chassis as they are quite old.

Isse: PSU 1 failed in chassis and we tried to replace it. Once replaced, we are getting the following output for it:

1#sh env all

Arbiter type 2, backplane type 7513MX (id 2)

Power supply #1 is TBD (id 0), Power supply #2 is 1200W AC (id 1)

We have been researching on the internet for answers but unfortunately due to the age of this model, there is very limited information available. We did find information which suggested to have BOTH PSU 1 & 2 with same revision. Right now the chassis is running only on PS2, we dont want to take down the chassis just to confirm the revision number on the PSU and there is no way to see that on the CLI. What we can do is get another pair of same revision PSUs, insert PSU1 first THEN take out PSU2 and then insert the same revision as PS1 in PSU2 slot but the moment we insert PSU1 in we get that TBD state which is not normal status and raises our doubts about putting the same revision PSUs with the method above, there is a chance that after we insert PSU1 in, the moment we take out PSU2, the chassis might not run on PSU1 due to its abnormal state.

As for the TBD state  - it means exactly as stated that router information about the PSU is yet to-be collected and if the PSU is stuck i thsi state, that idnicates and issue in HW. There are no official documents per my knowledge that are explaining this PSU status.

As for revision mismatch  - TBD could be caused by that problem. The chances are low because of the date when new revision was shipped but possibility is stillt here. The result of such mismatch could very greatly as internal communication between components, diags, etc. could be disrupted by PSU working and communicating with the router in slightly different way. The fact the result of mismatch is so unpredictable is the reason for the "must" caution above (otherwise we could simply block the mismaching PSU) - "must not be used simultaneously".

Other errors could be seen at the same time, at first glance not related to PSU.

Hi Noman,

Is new PSU a 1200W AC one?

"Power supply #1 is TBD (id 0)" indicates that router does not see PSU and since you already tried to replace it without result for another 1200W AC unit, the issue could be due to chassis intertface. In which case you need to replace MAS-7500CI=.

There is a low chance that new PSU is also faulty, so if you have some other chassis where you can test your urrently installed PSU 1, it would be worth to do.

Yes, the new PSU we tried was a new one, but then again, even though rare, there is a chance its a DOA. Not sure about the possibility of getting it shipped back to us to test in another chasis here but whats your take on running different revisions i.e. 34-0049-01 and 34-0667-01 are the 2 different revisions that we have come across for it.

Your original post about the versions is correct, that still should be checked. But new PSU revision started shipping at as of November 14, 1995, so PSU 2 has to be very old to cause such mismatch.

Caution

The new and older power supplies must not be used simultaneously in the Cisco 7513. The redundant power, load-sharing feature of the Cisco 7513 requires identical power supplies in each of the two power supply bays. While no physical damage will occur if the two different supplies are installed into a Cisco 7513, there is the possibility of erratic system behavior and error messages.

New AC-input power supply Part Number is 34-0667-01. (Replaces power supply Part Number 34-0049-01.)

I suggest to check the router installation time, it will give estimation on when PSU2 was installed. As for PSU1  - you can check revision on the lable without service impact as it is not working now.

Thanks again for your swift reply Ivan, greatly appreciate your help. Just one last thing, can you provide a link to Cisco explaination for "TBD" state of PSUs?, just to add to that, how can we know if that TBD state is not being caused by a revision mismatch. What exactly should be hapenning when we insert a mismatch revision PSU.
