Cisco 877 and Vlans :)

GuyCisco

Good Day Everyone

We are building a network on a budget and managed to get 3 Cisco 877 ADSL routers for 50 bucks a piece. What a bargain!

I have a little question though.

According to the documentation on these routers they "Should Support"up to 4 VLANs. Which is fine, you can add a network on each LAN port. This way you can work around not being able to assign virtual interfaces or being able to assign ip addresses to each individual port.

All 3 of my bargain/bin Cisco 877 routers though seem to be limited to only the default + 1 additional VLAN... Bummer seems like these are meant for REALLY small SOHO networks...

Is there a way i can work around this limitation?

Or is there a specific version of IOS i need to load to support up to 4 VLANs?

The memory on all 3 routers seems to be limited to files up to 21mb so so the highest version of IOS I have been able to go was 12.4.24 Advanced IP Services or 15.1.4 advanced security. Currently running 12.4.24 AIS.

Kind Regards

870 supports up to 4 VLANs ... if it's loaded with IOS version 12.4 (and later).
Downgrade the IOS to 12.3 and 10 VLANs are supported.

Hello,

I think you need Advanced IP Services to run multiple VLANs...

How much memory do you have ? Post the output of 'show version'...

Hi

Unfortunately it doesn't work for me. Here i have two of my routers

one i just upgraded to IOS package c870-adventerprisek9-mz.123-8.yi3.bin

Another one on  c870-advsecurityk9-mz.124-24.T1.bin

Both of these IOS versions only allow me to add 2x vlans.

Is this maybe something stuck in the NVRAM limiting my vlans?

Referring to your post here. I think you are getting 10 Vlans because you were using a different model router the Cisco 871W (MPC8272) processor (revision 0x200) with 118784K/12288K.

I cant really say for certain since all of the 800 series routers share the same feature sheet.

http://www.maxitelonline.com/productos/descarga/Cisco%20870%20-%20Q&A.pdf

I've tested this router and it can support 10 VLANs if loaded with 12.3 (HERE).

You're trying to create more than 2 VLANs running 12.4.  This won't work.

Good Evening

I swopped to using c870-advipservicesk9-mz.123-8.YI2.bin

But it doesnt seem to support vlans at all. I have a version of 12.3-14 thats a bit older that im going to try next then move back to 12.4 and try adv ip services

Router#conf t
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
Router(config)#vlan 20
^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

Router(config)#vlan ac
Router(config)#vlan accounting
Router(config)#vlan 20
^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

Router(config)#

I will try the advanced ip services tonight and post back thanks.

Hello,

try the 'vlan database' exec command:

877#vlan database

Am i doing something wrong? c870-advipservicesk9-mz.123-14.YT1.bin also wont allow me to add vlans...

There should be a vlan.dat file in your flash. What do you get with the 'vlan database' exec command ?

So can you add your VLANs here ?

E.g.:

Router(vlan)#vlan 30

Yes Georg however im still limited to 2 vlans, I reinstalled the Advanced security firmware124.23 though as advanced ip services 123.8 and .14 wont even give me the command for vlan database or to add vlans.

I will keep looking for a version of advanced ip services 124 that will give me 4x vlans. there is only 2 versions of 123 available as far as i can see.

Kind Regards
