Cisco 887 VAM switch module

Hi, can anyone advise what the switch module does on this device? I'm confused between vlans and actual physical router FastEthernet ports (4 on this device). Do they just provide inter-vlan routing? If so, how as the concept of router-on-a-stick doesn't seem to apply here?

Why is there a limit of vlans on this device (6 I believe?)

Those 4 ports only do purely Layer 2 stuff in a simplified manner. The 4-ports will do VLANs and the router itself can do the inter-VLAN routing. Bear in mind that the router an only do up to 8 VLANs only (VLAN 1 included).
