cisco c3825 router connected to Motorola cable modem MB8600 connected with xfinity Residental for Internet on Gi0/0 and 3560G with POE connected for internal on Gi0/1. I am attempting to ping 8.8.8.8 which is google and fails but I am able to ping the modem's default gateway. I am unable to get internet access from the router and is unable to proceed any further until then. I have verified that there is internet and verified the modem is working.

C3825Router#ping 8.8.8.8

Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 8.8.8.8, timeout is 2 seconds:

The output of show ip interface brief does confirm that the router is using address 192.168.100.200 and the output of show arp does confirm that there is a connected device at 192.168.100.1. These sort of seem to confirm the configuration. I find the suggestion that the relationship should be based on DHCP rather than static addressing to be very interesting. And perhaps suggests that it might be the security policy that I wonder about (address not learned via DHCP/no address in the binding table). I would be very interested in the results if you do make the changes suggested by Antonin.

I have been able to get it to ping google.com and 8.8.8.8. Another problem that just came up is that I am unable to get the computers to pull a private IP address from the router and also 3560G 48 port POE switch is only showing the mode lights when it powers up and is unresponsive when attempting to access the switch using Putty. The second switch is accessible and configured correctly but devices and computers connected are not getting a proper ip address from DHCP. when provided a static to other computers it is unable to connect to the internet even when connected to the router using a crossover cable

Thanks for the update letting us know that you have resolved the problem about pinging to resources in the Internet. I am not sure what to make of your other issues. It is not clear whether it is one problem with several manifestations or is several problems. So lets try to take it a step at a time and see what we can figure out.

You say that you are not able to get computers to pull private addresses from the router. If you manually configure a computer with an appropriate IP address, mask, and gateway then is the computer able to access the router? (can the computer ping the router?) If the computer is successful in ping to the router then there is some problem with DHCP scopes or perhaps a problem with the helper address used to forward the DHCP request. If the computer can not ping the router then there is some problem with connectivity between the computer and the router.

I am not clear what you are telling us about the 3560 switch and want to wait on that till we have resolved the question about DHCP.

I think you are telling us that a computer configured manually and connected to router using a cross over cable can not access the Internet. That suggests that there is a problem in your configuration of address translation. Can you provide the router config so we can check this out?

I have attached an image of what is similar to what my other switch is doing

Hello,

add IP addresses to your subinterfaces:

interface GigabitEthernet0/1.25
description LAN-Data
encapsulation dot1Q 25 native
ip address 10.10.25.1 255.255.255.0
ip nat inside
ip virtual-reassembly in
!
interface GigabitEthernet0/1.35
description LAN-Voice
encapsulation dot1Q 35
ip address 10.10.35.1 255.255.255.0
ip nat inside
ip virtual-reassembly in

Also, shut down interfaces Vlan 25 and Vlan 35 on the switch, and make sure the link between the switch and the router is a trunk...

I agree with Georg that the main problem is not having IP addresses on the sub interfaces of the router. This would explain why devices are not able to pull IP addresses. And not having any IP address on any of the physical interface or vlan sub interfaces explains why nothing (not even the computer connected to router via crossover cable) is able to access outside.

I do not agree about shutting down the vlan interfaces on the switch. If you shut down the vlan interfaces then you lose management access to the switch. I think it would be beneficial to keep at least interface vlan 35 active so that you have management access. I agree that having interface vlan 25 does not serve a useful purpose.

My bad...Richard is absolutely right, leave one of the Vlan interfaces up...I thought I spotted another interface for management (Vlan 11 ?) but it looks like that is not being used for that purpose...

After adding the IP addresses the computers were able to get connected to the internet that is directly connected to the switch that doesn't have POE but anything connected to the POE capable switch is unable to connect due to the what the switch is doing. All of the lights on the left side which are the different modes are located are showing a yellow color. When connecting to the computer through the console port and the serial connection on the laptop I don't get any output from that switch. Which includes wireless access points and the Cisco IP desk phones

Here is a picture of what is going on53796-qwerty.jpg

The only way that I can get the router to get a public IP address was by doing static address. Is there any reason that would cause this?

The updated configuration is given on a different post

Hello,

--> After adding the IP addresses the computers were able to get connected to the internet that is directly connected to the switch that doesn't have POE but anything connected to the POE capable switch is unable to connect due to the what the switch is doing.

I am lost on your physical topology. How many switches do you have ? One or two ? Or are you talking about PoE enabled ports on the 3560G that are not working ?

Regarding the static IP address, it is quite possible that your provider doesn't want to do DHCP. Did you get the static IP address from your provider, on a setup data sheet ?

There are two switches 3560G-48 and the other is 3560G POE switch. The 3560G POE switch is the one down and showing all the lights for the list of modes a yellow color. Anything connected to the 3560G-48 switch is able to connect to the internet.

The static IP address was pulled from what the cable modem was giving the computer when it was directly connected to the computer. I had the router set for DHCP but was not getting an IP address and was able to connect to the internet once I set the public IP address to the port connected to the cable modem.

Hello,

the green LEDs on your switch actually mean the switch is (should be) functioning. Can you break into ROMMON ?

I have attempted to do so but I am not able to get any output from the switch when connected to the console port and not changed from the lights as a normal startup process

Hello,

not sure if this has already be mentioned, but try to do a factory default reset:

Power down the switch, power it back on with the mode button pressed. This should get you to the 'switch:' prompt.

Also, which emulator are you using ? Try Putty or TeraTerm (or one of those in the link below), also try different baud rates...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_terminal_emulators#Microsoft_Windows

I have attempted the steps given and was unsuccessful even trying different emulators like putty and different baud rates and had the same result
