Good morning,

I have a Catalyst 2970 series switch with c2970-lanbase-mz.122-25.SEB4 image, when I tried to configure LLDP it was not recognized over the switch is there a way to upgrade the version over the switch to a newer one and is there a way to install another version other than lanbase that supports newer features over it.

It looks like the 2970 can not do it ; it is also very old :

Can a 2970 be IOS updated?  Believe so.

Can your 2970 be IOS updated?  Depends whether yours already has the latest IOS version.

Normally you can check Cisco's main web site for available versions, but for EoL devices they are now often no longer shown.  Also, normally you need a support contract to download.

Would a later IOS version support LLDP?  For an "old" device, likely not (Cisco was late to the LLDP party because they already had CDP).

Can a 2970 LANBASE IOS be upgraded to a better feature set?  I don't know without research, but many LANBASE switches are limited to that feature set.

Hi,

According to the Release Notes the LLDP support for your box was introduced with the "12.2(37)SE" IOS Release.

Please see beneath:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3750/software/release/12-2_37_se/release/notes/OL12631.html

You will find the information under the "New Software Features" heading:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3750/software/release/12-2_37_se/release/notes/OL12631.html#pgfId-850774

Best regards,

Antonin

@amikat for a 2970 too?

Hi,

Both Catalyst 2970G-24T and Catalyst 2970G-24TS are listed, please see Table1:

Earlier, I was reading forums on my phone, and it wouldn't open your references (they kept hanging).

I'm now using a desktop, and can view the above reference and your earlier references. Oh, and BTW, believe you intended to refer to table 7 in your last reply, which does show LLDP in that release for a 2970.

I also tried to determine what the final release was for the 2970, might be up to c2970-lanbase-mz.122-44.SE6 (oh, and I found two Internet sources which appear to have this image).

I want to thank you all for your help, but I have a question my firmware that is currently running over the switch is 12.2(25)SEB4  and I have read that there are newer versions when I google it, I find out new releases is there a way to download c2960-lanbasek9-mz.122-53.SE2.bin from cisco because I do not want to download it from the Internet

Hello M02@rt37

I have tried to search over it but I could not find anything related to 2970 is there any other website for Cisco that provides out-of-support firmware since the 2970 has been out of support since 2011

Sure, that's quite understandable, but if Cisco doesn't or won't provide it as it's EoL, your options are rather limited to update the IOS.

Years ago, I was in a somewhat similar situation with some old/EoL Cisco (3550?) switch still in production.  Forget why, but I wanted the last released IOS.  No help from Cisco, even though the company I was working at was a very, vary large buyer of Cisco equipment.  (Actually, if I could get our CEO to call Cisco's CEO, that might have worked, but I doubted our CEO was willing to spend their time doing so.  Laugh - I didn't try - so who knows - anyway . . .)  Fortunately, we still have a few of these switches still in production (among our 5,000 Cisco network devices) and found one running its latest IOS.  So I was able to copy it to the one I wanted to update; success (including solving whatever the issue I needed it for).
