Cisco Catalyst 4900M Serial number issue

nmccontent
Level 1
Level 1

We need help to confirm which serial number should be used as device serial number for Cisco Catalyst 4900M devices.

We were reporting Supervisor(Slot 1) serial number as special case for 4900M device but customer is complaining for that.

I couldn't find the reason why 4900M is treated differently than other catalyst models.

Here is the command output from the device:

show inventory

NAME: "Switch System", DESCR: "Cisco Systems, Inc. WS-C4900M 3 slot switch "
PID: MIDPLANE          , VID:      , SN: XXX12345678

NAME: "Supervisor(slot 1)", DESCR: "4900M 10GE (X2) with 8 10GE X2 ports"
PID: WS-C4900M         , VID: V07  , SN: YYY12345678

All these command output contains serial number that matches MIDPLANE’s serial number in the ‘show inventory’ output.

My customer is saying MIDPLANE's serial number should be used as device serial number.

I also found that there is another command “sh idprom chassis” gives serial number information and that also matches MIDPLANE’s serial number.

I need your expert opinion on this.

How about "sh ver"?

HTH

Thanks for your response.

Here is the complete sh ver output: [I have changed actual serial number with XXX123456 ]

To confirm, you may want to look at the actual chassis S/N, which is also located in the front of the chassis.

This link show where it is located.

HTH

Thanks for pointing me to the link.

I don't have physical device access to check serial number. Is there a way to validate using CLI? I can provide complete command output if needed.

I can still ask customer to check on the physical device. but not sure if he can gets it.

4900M is a chassis system. The serial number of the chassis is the one that counts.
Anything else is a "child" of the chassis.

Could you help me to point which one is correct serial number in the below output that should be used as device serial  number? Others are clear to identify but between "Switch System" and "Supervisor(slot 1)" which one is the device serial number is my query.

show inventory

NAME: "Switch System", DESCR: "Cisco Systems, Inc. WS-C4900M 3 slot switch "
PID: MIDPLANE          , VID:      , SN: XXX12345678

NAME: "Supervisor(slot 1)", DESCR: "4900M 10GE (X2) with 8 10GE X2 ports"
PID: WS-C4900M         , VID: V07  , SN: YYY12345678

NAME: "TenGigabitEthernet1/1", DESCR: "10Gbase-SR"
PID: X2-10GB-SR , VID: V04 , SN: FNS12345678

NAME: "TenGigabitEthernet1/2", DESCR: "10Gbase-SR"
PID: X2-10GB-SR , VID: V04 , SN: FNS12345679

NAME: "Linecard(slot 2)", DESCR: "10/100/1000BaseT (RJ45) with 20 10/100/1000 baseT "
PID: WS-X4920-GB-RJ45 , VID: V02 , SN: JAE12345678

NAME: "Linecard(slot 3)", DESCR: "10/100/1000BaseT (RJ45) with 20 10/100/1000 baseT "
PID: WS-X4920-GB-RJ45 , VID: V02 , SN: JAE12345666

NAME: "FanTray 1", DESCR: "FanTray"
PID: WS-X4992 , VID: V02 , SN: FOX12345678

NAME: "Power Supply 1", DESCR: "Power Supply ( AC 960W )"
PID: PWR-C49M-1000AC , VID: V01 , SN: SN12345678

NAME: "Power Supply 2", DESCR: "Power Supply ( AC 960W )"
PID: PWR-C49M-1000AC , VID: V01 , SN: SN12345655

NAME: "Switch System", DESCR: "Cisco Systems, Inc. WS-C4900M 3 slot switch "
PID: MIDPLANE          , VID:      , SN: XXX12345678

To me, above S/N the closest to be a chassis S/N. And if someone can match this with the one in front of the switch, than you are good to go.

HTH

 Appreciate your response. Thank you.

I will get this confirmed from customer too by checking on the physical device directly.
