Computer won't connect through switch but will through router

I am using newer asus laptop with windows 7 to connect to a sg100d-08 8 port gigabit switch which connects to a tp link tl-wr1043nd router. Or at least I'd like to. Had the same computer and wiring connecting through a Tp link tl-sf1008d switch to router and all worked fine. New Cisco sg100d-08 switch and it won't connect. Says cable unplugged, no Ethernet lights as computer, switch or router. If I bypass the switch and connect the same computer and wiring directly to the router it connects fine. Any suggestions?

Did you try connecting in different ports of the switch? I mean, putting the Laptop and router in different ports to see which port gives you connectivity.

Here is a link of a Quick Start Guide with the connectivity specs. Maybe that could help you

http://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/csbus/sg100d-08/quick_start/guide/78-19191-01.pdf

As I could see, there are a few non-logic points that are present in the guide which could fix the problem, for example: "Turn off all the devices you're trying to connect to the switch and after all is connected, turn all on again".

Hope this can help you.

small chance but still try checking if your cable is straight through or cross-over, in that case your new switch is not supporting cross-over cable.

so you're connecting the cisco switch to the tp-link router and the connection between the two is not connected.

The tplink router's 4 ports are actually switch ports, so connect the switch to the router with a crossover cable.

The tplink switch might have had something like MDIX running.
