conecting 4948 Switch and dell ps 6010 with 10GB SFP??

Ivan Marinovic

Dear network guru,

i am new to cisco and new to this forum, and first would like to say hellou to everyone...

now lets go to the big problem:-)

I need to connect this two devices:

cisco 4948 switch and dell ps 6010 storage. I am using two SFP 10GB (h10GB-CU3M), but when they are inserted in available port there is no green light (no activity).

cisco switch port configuration:

interface TenGigabitEthernet1/50
switchport access vlan 804
switchport mode access
mtu 9198
spanning-tree portfast
!
interface TenGigabitEthernet1/51
switchport access vlan 804
switchport mode access
mtu 9198

So am i missing something?

thx,

Ivan

Ivan,

Looking at the output of sh interfaces, you have physical layer connectivity problem that needs be resolved first.

Since these are 10Gig, are these SFP+ or SFP?.  Usually SFP is used for 1Gig connection and SFP+ for 10Gig.

Is the fiber cable multimode or single mode?

Are your SFPs multimpde or single mode?

Your patch cable has to match your SFP

Is the patch cable good?

One more thing,

4948 takes X2 type optics not SFP can you clarify?

Reza

Reza,

thx for your replay.

But i think that sfp are good. They are shipped with Dell storage they are actualy cisco Twinax with cable ( SFP-H10GB-CU3M) http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps5455/data_sheet_c78-455693.html

is there problem with IOS? Maybe this version doesnt support this type of sfp?

i am using  12.2(44r)SG9?

THX,

IVan

To me, that is a physical layer problem.  Have you tested the SFPs?  On the Dell side, are the ports enabled?  Have you tested the cable with something such as a link runner to verify layer one before looking at the actual devices?  Just my thoughts....

Also show int tran will show SFP info.

show interfaces transceivers

Use the show interfaces transceivers privileged EXEC command to display the physical properties of a small form-factor pluggable (SFP) module interface.

when i hit:

DSW-BD1-DC#sh int transceiver
If device is externally calibrated, only calibrated values are printed.
++ : high alarm, +  : high warning, -  : low warning, -- : low alarm.
NA or N/A: not applicable, Tx: transmit, Rx: receive.
mA: milliamperes, dBm: decibels (milliwatts).

                                 Optical   Optical
Temperature  Voltage  Tx Power  Rx Power
Port       (Celsius)    (Volts)  (dBm)     (dBm)
---------  -----------  -------  --------  --------
Te1/49       24.5       3.28      -2.7      -2.6

this is sfp is for connnection to core switch.

When i connect one sfp to dell server and other end to dell storage they can comunicate. so i thin that sfp are good.

THX,

IVan

You may have to load 12.2(54)SG to support it

Catalyst 4900 Series

(continued)

WS-C4948E

SFP-H10GB-CU1M1
SFP-H10GB-CU3M1
SFP-H10GB-CU5M1

SFP-10G-SR
SFP-10G-LRM
SFP-10G-LR

SFP-10G-ER

12.2(54)SG

15.0(2)SG

12.2(54)SG

12.2(54)SG

15.0(2)SG

1 Only Version -02 or later is supported.

Reza,

thx you very much! I hope this will reslove my problem! i will test it next week!

Have a nice weekend!

THX,

Ivan

Dear everyone,

the ios is updated but still same proble....

when i hit: sh int ....

type is 1000BASECX.  But 10GB SFP is inserted in port!

Any sugestion?

Update....we are moving but not like we would like :-)

We manage to connect dell storage ps 6010 with dell server r710. so storage is set and working. But this for us this is not good solution because two more dell server are arriving and we would like to connect them to with storage. So we need to connect the storage to cisco 4948 10GB switch. But when we connect dell storage with same 10GB SFP that we use to connect it with dell storage on cisco switch i don’t get any port activity.

It says „not connected“

Maybe some command is missing on dell storage or cisco switch to successful communicate?!?

You said:

this is sfp is for connnection to core switch.

Question...where is the SFP info for the one inserted for connection to the Dell?
Is the above output taken when you have the SFP inserted?

If so, we have isolated it down to the Cisco, since you should atleast see the SFP inserted.

Problem solved...

it is not possible to connect Dell ps 6010 with Cisco 4948 switch! For that you need to use full 10GB switch. says dell technician :-)

Thanks for the update.
