Copy IOS from one switch to another?

Andrew Cormier

Hi!

It seems I have seen this before (and even done it once a few years ago).. but it has been a while.

I have a stack with a Cisco 3750 stack that I have to replace a member.

The replacement switch is a 3750X.

I think I have to upgrade the IOS of the older switch to be the same as the 3750X.

Current switch:      WS-C3750G-48TS     12.2(46)SE

TO BE ADDED      WS-c3570X-48          15.0 (1)SE2

It seems to me there was a way to upgrade the older switch IOS from the newer switch or downgrade the newer switch with the older IOS.

I dont have the Cisco account to download updated IOSs.

Thoughts?

Are you are saying the 3740G ios isn't compatible to the 3570x

The 3750G IOS version is 12.2(46)SE and this version is not supported by the 3750X.  The 3750X can run both universal IOS or IP Base IOS.

So if the 3750X upgrades to IP Base, then Andrew will need to upgrade the 3750G to the same version and feature set.

By default, the majority of the 3750X I've received always comes with a universal IOS.

Next question will be this:  What version of IOS?

This question can be answered by looking at the flash space/size of the older 3750G.  If the 3750G has a flash size of 16 mb, then the highest IOS the 3750G can run is 12.2(55)SE to SE7.  The 3750G cannot run 12.2(58)SE, 15.0(1)SE nor 15.0(2)SE.

Hello andrew,

You are correct the ios version need to be the same, if you dont have access to cco then you can pull the ios off the exisitng live switch.

1) connect a pc to the live switch

2) make sure you have a tftp software to use or set you pc as a tftp server

from switch:

sh flash:xxxxx.xxxx.xxxxx.bin
copy flash:xxxxx.xxxx.xxxxx.bin TFTP

Then on the new switch reverse the proceedure

copy tftp  xxxxx.xxxx.xxxxx.bin flash

Won't work and I'll tell you why.

The newer 3750X runs on a filename called "universal" IOS.  This file is incompatible to the older 3750G.   Can you post the output taken from the 3750X:  dir flash1:

Hello Leoaohoo

Are you are saying the 3740G ios isn't compatible to the 3570x? -- if so Andrew apologies for the incorrect post.

At least the transfer method is generic!

Thanks for all the replies!! Here is the dir from the new 3750X switch.

Show ver on the existing stack shows me

cisco WS-C3750G-24TS (PowerPC405) processor (revision M0) with 118784K/12280K bytes of memory

but note that it says it is the 24TS ... we have a 24 and a 48 stacked together. We are replacing the 24 with the 48port 3750x.

Not sure how to get the info just on the 48 port switch.

Hello,

Dir flash:x ( number of each switch in stack)

Pretty certain we cant do it. The X switches IOS doesnt ahve IP Service. Will have to use another3750G

For the new switch I copied the bin/boot file from the existing stack members.. deleted the bin file from the new switch and copied the bin back over tftp to the new switch... boot system flash:binfilehere.bin and reloaded. Seems solid.

Thanks for the help

The X switches IOS doesnt ahve IP Service.

How about if I confuse you a tiny bit?  Yes, the 3750X only has Universal IOS and IP Base feature set, however, you can "mix" a stack as long as the 3750/3750G is running IP Services feature set and the 3750X is running Universal IOS with IP Services license enabled.

But again the IOS you are running, 12.2(46)SE, is not supported on the 3750X.

You can load 12.2(55)SE7 IP Services into your 3750G but you MUST copy (and copy only) the BIN file to the switch.  You cannot and will not be able to load the full IOS (using the "archive") command.

Read the Release Notes of the 12.2(55)SE7 to ensure that this version supports the exact sub-model of 3750X you are using.

I deleted all file from catalyst 3560G. I want to copy IOS from switch to another switch but I need to all step for both switches.
