I'm in the process of learning about Cisco routers and switches creating a home lab. I would like to extend my existing network by adding a Cisco 2960X 24 port switch to the end of my network in my basement. The last switch is a Netgear GS108Ev3 which is setup for:
VLAN 1 not a member of any of the ports
VLAN 5 Main Network all ports are untagged except 1 and 2 for trunk
VLAN 10 future use tagged on port 1 and 2
VLAN 20 future use tagged on port 1 and 2
VLAN 30 future use tagged on port 1 and 2
VLAN 40 GUEST network tagged on port 1 and 2
I'm trying to connect the 2960X to the trunk port and for now leave all the other ports on VLAN 5.
After reading a bunch on this confusing topic for a newbie, Cisco used VLAN 1 as the default and native vlan. Security recommendations are to change this to another VLAN.
So far I've added all the ports to VLAN 5: sw access vlan 5, then set port 1/0/1 to trunk : int gi 1/0/1, sw mode trunk
I'm unable to ping my router at 192.168.5.1
Sorry for the basic question but I'm stumped. Thanks in advance.

1st question is what STP and trunking does GS108Ev3 supports? Is it 8-port Gigabit Unmanaged Plus switch?
Cisco does STP per vlan; not sure if your Netgear supports same flavor, not likely, Also not sure how much control you have over at Netgear.
Yes, Cisco used VLAN 1 as the default and native vlan and for Security reasons you should change that. Native vlan is per link only so 2 sides must match. Both switches should support dot1q trunking.
You need vlan 5 in database, make sure it is there on both side. if still doesnot work, switch back to vlan 1 as native

The GS108Ev3 does support VLANs and uses the 802.1q. Which I'm using. Not sure about STP as it has an option for loop detection on/off.
1) Can I disable STP on 2960 and turn off loop detection on the netgear for compatibility?
2) Do I need to turn on vlan1 on the trunk ports on the netgear to have the 2 sides match?
Edit: Called Netgear and they said the STP is BPDU
