Custom Factory-Reset for SG300 possible?

Hello there dear Cisco-community,

I have a question concerning the possibilty of a "custom factory-reset" for SG300-switches.

We are using our SG-300 switches in the event-industry(Audio, Lights, Video, etc.) which means, that they are always used in a different context(no fixed installation). To make the live of our technicians on the road easier we would love to be able to have some sort of "custom factory-reset". This is also driven by the fact, that we have heard rumours of such a possibility.

So here I am to ask, if anything like this would be possible?

We are looking into making a custom setup on the switches with our preferred settings and store that in a way, that it would "survive" a factory-reset.

Is this possible?

Looking forward to your answers,

Manfred

yes correct it would need to be done everytime you wipe the device , so if was remote you would need a serial console connected to it so it could be done but its not automatic

Theres no full ability on these switches or catalyst for something like custom state on reset that i have ever seen anyway

Theres no mention of sg switches being able to perform any custom factory resets in the admin guides or have i personally seen it on any of them , but what about storing the config file through cli in flash and pushing it back into ruinning config when reset is down ? you can do that on catalyst might be worth checking on sg models but you need to be in cli mode id say

Returning the Device to the Factory
Default Settings
To use the
Reset
button to reboot or reset the managed switch, do the
following:
•To
reboot
the managed switch, press the
Reset
button for less than 10
seconds.

To
restore
the managed switch configuration to the factory default
settings:
1. Disconnect the managed switch
from the network or disable all
DHCP servers on your network.
2. With the power on, press-and-hold the
Reset
button for more than
10 seconds.

you could check for certain on the SMB TAC team

Hello Mark,

thank you for your answer.

I have found an article that sounds like it could be the solution to my problem here:

Is this what you are proposing?

Would that really lead to the switch always returning to a "defined setup" after a factory-reset?

Looking forward to your answer,

Manfred

Hi
so thats sort of what i was describing , it wont lead to a defined custom setup but when you wipe the device you can push the whole config back into the blank device without having to configure it . that how you would do it in catalyst , im not sure if its available in SMB switches but you could check if you have console access

so as an example if i wiped a router or switch i would have a backup of the full config in local flash or nvram wherever theres storage on the device , then when its blank after reset i would pull the config from flash and push it into startup and then save it to the running config , that would load everything up on the router straight away

3232477184 bytes total (2030026752 bytes free)
routertestA#copy runn fl
routertestA#copy runn flash:marksbackup.txt
Destination filename [marksbackup.txt]?

97056 bytes copied in 0.267 secs (363506 bytes/sec)
routertestA#dir flas
routertestA#dir flash:ma
routertestA#dir flash:marksbackup.txt
Directory of bootflash:/marksbackup.txt

23 -rw- 97056 Jan 16 2018 09:27:52 +00:00 marksbackup.txt

3232477184 bytes total (2029924352 bytes free)
routertestA#copy flas
routertestA#copy flash:ma
routertestA#copy flash:marksbackup.txt st
routertestA#copy flash:marksbackup.txt startup-config

Then copy startup to running config and save

so as an example if i wiped a router or switch i would have a backup of the full config in local flash or nvram wherever theres storage on the device , then when its blank after reset i would pull the config from flash and push it into startup and then save it to the running config , that would load everything up on the router straight away

Hello Mark,

just to make sure, that I am correctly understanding this ...

I would apply this via CLI *once* oder would have to do it after *every* reset ??

If I have to do it after each reset, it wouldn't help me, because out in the field the switch is supposed to be reset into a custom state, without any other "user-interaction"

Thanks again,

Manfred.

yes correct it would need to be done everytime you wipe the device , so if was remote you would need a serial console connected to it so it could be done but its not automatic

Theres no full ability on these switches or catalyst for something like custom state on reset that i have ever seen anyway

Hi again Mark,

so in this case we will disable the reboot / reset-switch on our SG-300s and store our custom setup on every switch.

Like this I assume, that our setup will just "stay" there unless someone messes with the configuration, which we will prevent by using a secret admin-password, that only our service-department knows ...

That seems to be the only way to provide our road-technicians with a stable configuration of the switches. altough this means we will disable the ability to make any changes to the switches while they are "on the road".

Thanks for your help,

Manfred.
