Hi all, on my 3550 switch, I have several vlans, for the default gateway for management I have set this as the ip address of one of the vlan interfaces, is this correct ?

Yes this is correct. On L2 switches you can have only 1 active management VLAn interface, while on L3 there can be many.

are you using your 3550 as a layer 2 or layer 3 switch? ie is the "ip routing" command enabled? if so, it's layer three, and your default route (not default gateway) takes priority.
Now, if yo'ure talking about setting the default gateway on each of the hosts in each vlan as the respective vlan interface, then yes, that's how you would normally enable inter-vlan routing in this situation.
