The 6500 and 7600 series don't require license. So, you should be able to upgrade to 15 with no need for any license.

I'm unsure Reza is 100% correct.
I believe you need a license (and pay extra) for the higher level feature set IOSs and I also believe a "free" IOS upgrade (same feature set) requires an active service contract.

Hi,
I haven't check license requirment on cat 6509, because customer choose to unchange it.
we are running 12.x on 6509, custmoer just want to update to 15.x and keep same feature on old version of ios software.
if we just runnng some of basic feature on old version of software, do we need license when we upgrade to 15.x?
it confuse me.
thank you!

My understanding is, moving from 12.x to 15.x, same feature set, you need a maintenance contract.
To avoid a license violation, it's probably best if you contact Cisco.

thank you!
because customer is out of contract and ask me can i update freely!
they worry about license,so stop upgrade!

Perhaps we need to clarify some terminology. The original question was about licensing and Reza answered correctly that if you are keeping the same features it should not require any additional license. Joseph correctly adds the observation that to upgrade versions requires an active service contract.
The original poster tells us that the customer is out of contract. So the correct thing is that they should stop the upgrade. The issue is not about license but is about maintenance contract. So they made the correct decision to stop the upgrade but perhaps for not quite the right reason.
