Does anyone have the procedure for replacing a faulty sup720-3b in a 6509-E chassis?

I'm looking for info on replacing a failed sup720-3b module that was in standby. I'm presuming the IOS will have to be loaded prior to installing or would redundancy SSO sync the active config & operating system across once the new card goes in?

You would need to load the same exact IOS as the primary in the new sup.  The SSO sync is only used to sync the config and not the IOS image.

1. Slide in the new ios

2. It may boot as standby cold as it may not have the same IOS as primary

3. Copy the IOS from primary bootflash/sup-bootdisk to the new standby

    copy bootflash: slavebootflash:

4. Ensure you have the correct bootvariable

    sh run | i boot

5. Reload the new standby sup

 hw-module module <slot number for standby sup> reset

or 

redundancy reload peer

Hi Madhu, Thanks for replying.. I take it there would be no problem inserting a new card with a potentially newer ios code than the current active sup. IE the current Sup won't try and take the new IOS level from the new standby card

No, you can safely slide in the new standby card. It won't try to fetch IOS from primary and also vice versa.

ok ta. One last question.... The checks on the boot variable. sh run | inc boot

do we do that one the new or old card? I presume its the active sup and as long as the image is on the slavebootflash: we should be ok
