Does anyone know about Catalyst 4948E (not 4948-E)?

Hello all,

The Cisco Configurator Tool shows the following models:

WS-C4948      Catalyst 4948, optnl sw, 48-Port 10/100/1000+4 SFP, no p/s     USD 7,995.00

WS-C4948-S      Catalyst 4948, IPB s/w, 48-Port 10/100/1000+4 SFP, 1 AC p/s     USD 10,495.00

WS-C4948-E      Catalyst 4948, ES s/w, 48-Port 10/100/1000+4 SFP, 1 AC p/s     USD 14,495.00

WS-C4948E      Catalyst 4948E, opt sw, 48-Port 10/100/1000+ 4 SFP+, no p/s     USD 10,495.00

WS-C4948E-S      Catalyst 4948E, IPB, 48-Port 10/100/1000+ 4 SFP+, AC p/s     USD 12,995.00

WS-C4948E-E      Catalyst 4948E, ES, 48-Port 10/100/1000+ 4 SFP+, AC p/s     USD 16,995.00

What is the difference between WS-C4948 and WS-C4948E (not WS-C4948-E)?  Is this Enhanced?  Cisco.com does not display any information about 4948E.  Also, a chat with a Cisco person could not answer this question.

Many thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

The difference appears to be in software:

WS-C4948-S

Cisco Catalyst 4948, IP Base software image (RIP, static routes), 1 AC power supply, fan tray

WS-C4948-E

Cisco Catalyst 4948, Enterprise Services software image (IPX, AppleTalk, OSPF, EIGRP, IS-IS, BGP), 1 AC power supply, fan tray

WS-C4948

Cisco Catalyst 4948, optional software image, optional power supplies, fan tray

No ... I am asking about 4948E, not about 4948-E.  If this was a typing error in the configurator tool then why the price difference?

I have not heard of this product being released but looking at the list above you will notice the 4948E has SFP+ ports.  I would say this is a newly released switch.  It may not be available on the product site yet but is on the price list.

Thanks, Aaron.  Makes sense although it would be nice to see a datasheet before being able to order it.

Well it may not be truly released and "available" but none the less it is on the configurator tool.
