Dual Sup 720 3B Rommon issue

Hello Pros

I am trying to set up a cisco 6504 with dual sups for redundancy so that if one SUP fails the other picks up the operation.

I have placed the Sups in mod 1 and mod 2. Also the IOS for both the Sups is sitting in disk0: of each SUP and both IOS are similar. No image is in the

sup_bootflash:  of both the SUPS

I have also defined the boot system command on the active SUP to boot from disk0.xxx.bin image. Redundancy is defined as SSO.

When i boot up the switch with both SUPs the secondary SUP shows up as UNKNOWN in the show mod command and when i console in the secondary it is always stuck in Rommon mode. I always have to manually console into the secondary SUP and issue a boot disk0: in order for it to come online

(Note the config-register for the SP and RP is in 0x2102 )

Here is the issue.

Q1. Do both the SUPs need the same  startup config or does the secondary sync automatically?

Q2  I already have the boot system disk0:xxx.bin command setup on both the  SUPS , do i have to have this command on both the SUPS?

Q3. How can i resolve the secondary SUP for not going into rommom mode as it defeats the purpose of redundancy in case of an event.

( In my case  i didn't copy the image from primary SUP through the command copy disk0:xxxx.bin slavedisk0:  , in my case i already had two flash disks  with  same images on it and so i plugged them in disk0 of each SUP)

Please advise how i can resolve this issue.

Hi,

When SSO is running correctly and both Sups are booting and working fine, the configuration should only apply to the primary Sup.  Then the primary will Sync its config to the backup Sup.  If also everything is working the way it supposed to, you don't even have access to the back up sup, only to the primary. So, defiantly there is something wrong with your setup.

Can you provide "sh red" when both sups are loaded in SSO mode?

Also, is there way for you to load the images to sup bootflash instead of disk0?

Are both disk0 CF and IOS images are exacrly the same?

HTH

Thanks Reza

Both disk0:  are compact flash and have the exactly same image.

i cannot load the image is the sup-bootflash as the image is too large so the only way is through disk0:

The issue is when i power the switch with both SUPs the secondary comes in rommon mode and this what i need to fix.

Please advice

Thanks

Can you try to set the boot command while in rommon?

Example:

rommon 2 >BOOT disk0:s72033-psv-mz.122-18.SXD7.bin

Reza

i already tried this and as i mentioned in my first post it works fine but as soon as reboot the switch again i encounter the same issue so this is temporary fix.

How can i  resolve this issue permanantly

when i do a show redundancy

Both Sups operate in SSO mode which indicates that the images are identical

Please advice

Any response is appreciated

When you do a "dir disk0" in rommon how many files/IOS images do you have?  If you have multiple images, can you delete the once that are not needed and only leave the IOS you need and see if it boots without interference. I have also seen a couple cases where you have to RMA the sup and get a new one in order to fix the issue.

Hi

We have SPA module(for VPN) in slot 3 so i have fpd.pkg also in disk0:

i dont know if this could be the reason for the secondary SUP going into rommon mode but the same is true for the primary SUP as it also this file in disk0: and it boots perfectly fine.

Thanks

Also take a look at this link for Rommon version upgrade/issue

On a Supervisor Engine 720 configured to  automatically boot, if the first entry in the boot string is incorrect  (for example, the entry has an incorrect image name or device), the  switch boots to the ROMMON prompt without searching the rest of the boot  string for a valid entry. This problem is resolved in Supervisor Engine  720 ROMMON software release 8.1(3). (CSCin43658/CSCec78845)

Hi,

Can you check the Config register value in rommon.

Rommon>set

Change the config-reg value to 0x2102 and see if it helps.

Rommon>confreg 0x2102

Rommon>sync

Rommon>set----> check whether the config reg value is changed to 0x2102

Hope this helps

Cheers
