EEM capability

Hi All,

I have heard about the Embedded even management capability within IOS devices. But is this only limited to Cisco IOS?

Can the IOS ( switches/ASA ) be used by other sub systems (vis applications) to send notifications/event alerts for them using cisco device IOS.

EEM is only supported on IOS. ASA doesn't support it, and switches that run IOS do as well. You need to have the appropriate IOS version though. 15.X requires a data license before you can run eem.

I'm not sure I understand the second part of your question though. EEM is used to take actions based on an event. You can have a script that dynamically creates and interface, advertise that interface in a routing protocol when a route drops out of the table. Think of it like a batch file that runs commands in sequence. Notifcations/event alerts are more of a syslog type feature that I think you're looking for if I'm not mistaken. If the device is having a problem, you can configure the device to send the alerts to a syslog server for you to review. Your syslog server can then be configured to alert you/email you/etc.

Thanks, my second part of query was whether this EEM feature can be used to carry forward the alerts from other sub systems.

i.e can we make use of IOS EEM to relay the alerts given by non-cisco devices/servers in the network.

Not that I'm aware of. EEM only runs locally on the router/switch and deals with the processes, config, etc of that device. It doesn't run external of a device to connect to the device to run, but is configured directly on the switch/router with "event manager applet ".
