Error opening tftp (Timed out)

Hello,

I installed a new router and trying to backup the initial configuration to our tftp server. But getting the error " %Error opening tftp://172.17.0.39/corporate-confg (Timed out)"

I can ping the tftp server from router. There is no firewall in between router and tftp server. Other network devices in the same subnet can upload / download from tftp server. Only this router can't use the tftp. I tried to install a seperate tftp server and tried but no hope with the freshly installed router. Router running config is attached. Please help me.

TFTD seems to be working. It bypasses the timeout error I was getting when trying to copy to tftp. Thank you.

YAdhu,

Eliminate the TFTP server for now.

Configure your Laptop to act as TFTP server.

Connect laptop to the Switch and try pulling the config and update us the result.

Hi Inayath,

Still no hope. Router is showing the same error. I tried tftpd32 and even another tftp (winagents) server which is installed on my computer and directly connected to router. Please see the attached screenshot. Don't know what is happening. The interesting part is all other devices can access this tftp without any issue.

You can ping the TFTP server but you can't transfer?  Nah, there's a firewall blocking.

If it's not a firewall, then there's an application stopping.

Thank you for the reply.

Yes, I can ping but can't transfer. I disabled the firewall even. This happens only with a newly installed router. Other devices are using this tftp server without any issue. Could you please check the running-config which I attached with my original question and check if anything is wrong.

could you post 'show flash'?

try using .cfg instead:

#copy run tftp://172.17.0.83/runningconfig.cfg

alternatively, just hit enter key to use corporate-config.

When you do TFTP and you get the "timed out" message, it always means that something is blocking.

Can you draw a network diagram about this setup?

How about hooking the router DIRECTLY to the PC/laptop/client?

Hi Leo,

No hope. Its really frustrating. This is what I tried:

1. Changed different PC

2. Connected directly to the PC.

3. Tried variuos tftp servers.

4. Disabled AV and firewall.

5. Connected to a different switch.

6. Used all the file extension that you have mentioned earlier.

This is the log that I am getting from one of the tftp server.

Also please see the network setup. Router ge0/0 is connected with switch and from the same switch I connected my laptop. Even I tried a direct connection between laptop & router but the same result.

Edit: Also I can see that in tftp server a 0kb file of running-config got created with an extension .p1 when I tried to copy running-config to tftp.

You got a switch between the client and the router?

Try copying the file from the router and into the switch.

Its not a Cisco switch, so I can't do that.

How do I copy this to a USB flash drive ? I tried to connect one  USB flash drive but don't know how to work with that. Can you please help me.

Firstly, not all USB thumb drives work.  So you'll need to try different sizes or different manufacturers.

Next, you need to format the USB thumb drive with FAT16 or you can use the router to format the USB.

The command to format is "format usbflash0:" if the USB is inserted into slot 0.  Use "usbflash1:" if the USB is inserted into slot 1.

To copy the running-config into USB, the command is "copy runn usbflash0:".

config looks fine. leo might be right. could be your PC or maybe an AV.

have you tried another PC with different OS?
